Rapture3D Audio Demo in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Rapture3D is an OpenAL driver that can produce 3D headphone surround sound using HRTFs. In this video, I’ve attempted to demonstrate this effect by comparing Rapture3D sound with the standard S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat sound. The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games support OpenAL so you can use the Rapture3D driver as the sound provider by selecting it in the game’s audio menu.

Notice how the sound positioning in all the ‘Generic Software’ clips is very “flat”. It only positions sounds using simple left-to-right panning. Then notice how ‘Rapture3D’ positions sounds all around you, allowing you to distinguish their positions in space much more precisely. The difference between in-front and behind, as well as above and below, is quite clear.

Rapture3D is made by Blue Ripple Sound.

When you’ve finished watching this video, rewind it and watch it again … this time with your eyes closed.

This video was created with the “User” version of Rapture3D. The speaker layout was set to “Headphone Stereo (Compat.)” and the decoder method was set to “HRTF (Red)”.

  • I have an Xi-fi card. How do I install the Rapture3D driver? Is it easy to install? I'm looking to play the first Stalker game. I find CMSS3D to be okay, better than no EAX/CMSS3D. But the positional cues are still not great.

  • In reply to meggerman: Did you use headphones because the effect won't work with speakers? Did you not hear the sounds going around your head – behind your back, above and below? If not, it could be that the particular HRTF setting that I used in Rapture3D was not suited to your ear shape. Rapture3D comes with 6 different HRTF modes so maybe one of the others would have worked better for you.

The very slight muffling of the sounds in certain instances is caused by the frequency response changes that are applied in by the HRTF. It is necessary to create the 3D audio effect. Rapture3D does not simply widen the audio image – it creates the sensation of being able to localize sound sources around you just like in real-life.

  • The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games use OpenAL so you won't even need to use ALchemy. Simply select your X-Fi from the in-game sound options menu and enable CMSS-3D in the X-Fi driver software and you should get pretty good surround sound in your stereo headphones.

I also have an X-Fi XtremeGamer and, whilst I do think CMSS-3D sounds great in OpenAL games, I think that Rapture3D is better. Sound coming from above and below is definitely more convincing with Rapture3D.

  • With a creative x-fi Xtremegamer I won't need rapture, correct? I assume alchemy works just as well as this.

  • Unfortunately, Battlefield 3 doesn't use OpenAL so there's no way to get Rapture3D to work with it.

  • try adjusting the equalizer to "anti" underwater to counter the underwater effect. I did that with my X-Fi card. Once I got used to positional audio (with the underwater effect) I used it for music also. I couldn't take the sounds comming from inside my head, they need to be out there. Having a chopper flying around inside Your head is the worst lol.

  • My X-Fi with CMSS-3D HeadPhone went dead so now I have no HRTF which makes a great difference. Do You know if Rapture3D will work with Battlefield 3 please? I have a directsound soundcard with Xear3D (no effect really) and a Creative Recon3D with THX TrueStudio Pro (which sounds great except the positioning is crap). Thank You. Playing without HRTF is so annoying.

  • Yeah, I can understand the DLL replacement and config file editing can be a nuisance but, for me, it is so worth the effort! Luckily, STALKER: Call of Pripyat is one of the games that doesn't need any of that stuff.

I also wish that the Source engine supported OpenAL because I love Valve's games. I even made a topic on the forums asking for it. If you have a forum account, maybe consider adding your support. I've added a link to the forum topic in the video description.

  • By the looks of that version number, I'd say you're using the "Game" version of Rapture3D, which comes packaged with certain games. I'm afraid the "Game" version only works with those specific games. If you want to use Rapture3D with other OpenAL games, you'll need to purchase a copy of the "User" version or the "Advanced" version from Blue Ripple Sound's website.

  • I actually never had a problem with positional accuracy. I could always tell which direction a bloodsucker was coming from. All I use the default Realtek drivers that go with my motherboard.

  • Why did he wear no gas mask while recording Generic Software? I get the Rapture, space coordination is a lot better, you can hear where are bullets coming from, but the sound is weird, as I said: like underwater preset on my equalizer.

  • If Rapture3D sounds like under water, then real life sounds like under water. Perhaps you were mislead by the characters' speech in the gun fight. It always sounds muffled, regardless of the sound device, because the characters are wearing gas masks.

Regarding 5.1, I've heard many complaints about it not working at all with OpenAL's Generic Software device (eg: Unreal Tournament 3). Rapture3D, on the other hand, supports every speaker configuration in the known universe.

  • I like generic software on my headphones… Rapture sounds like under water. Besides, I can always pop headphones out and go real 5.1
